The Data As Intellectual Property Dilemma

  • UVM Alumni House 61 Summit Street Burlington, VT 05401 USA (map)

Please join EMBOLDIA for a special breakfast conversation about harnessing the power of big data analysis to ensure a business Intellectual Property portfolio is a significant contributor to the company’s bottom line. Moderated by veteran technologist Philippe Collard Founding Partner, Yabusame Partners. Montreal, Canada.

What is the real value of data? Everybody talks about it, wants it, wants to protect it. We know companies such as Facebook derive a lot of value from user data, but the value of user data is not accounted for in their financial statements.

Who owns me? From Facebook to 23andme, to credit card companies, to Amazon each and every one of these companies “own” a little piece of us. There are companies making claims to IP for specific genes. How can we retain the rights to our own data and who owns the results of whatever is done with our data?

IP protection in the 21sth century. Is a patent still relevant if it cannot be enforced?
